American Airlines has ended flights to three destinations in the U.S., Mexico, and the Middle East, affecting travel options for many. These destinations include Santa Maria, California, Tijuana, Mexico, and Doha, Qatar. This information comes from aviation analytics by Cirium, as reported by Simple Flying.
The withdrawal leaves Santa Maria without service from a major U.S. airline, while Tijuana loses its only non-stop route from a U.S. carrier. American Airlines cut its routes from Phoenix to both Santa Maria and Tijuana, ceasing its operations in these locations. For Santa Maria, Allegiant Air remains the sole commercial airline, offering flights to Las Vegas.
“American Airlines cited route performance and network adjustments as reasons for cutting these services.”
Qatar Airways now manages the Philadelphia-to-Doha route, ensuring continued non-stop service between these cities. The decision to cancel the Santa Maria service was due to underperformance. This route, operated under American Eagle in collaboration with SkyWest Airlines, ceased on May 7.
In the case of Philadelphia-to-Doha, American Airlines suspended and then permanently cut the route in June, influenced by regional conflicts. The service did not meet performance standards, leading to the decision. Service to Tijuana also ended in August because it did not fulfill performance expectations.
American Airlines frequently reviews its routes to optimize aircraft use. According to AirlineGeeks, service to Tijuana did not achieve the desired performance. They stated, “As part of optimizing our network and fleet, American has made the difficult decision to discontinue service to Doha, Qatar (DOH).”
Steven Arroyo, an aviation safety expert and retired United Airlines captain, explained that route cancellations are common in the airline industry. He shared with Fox News Digital, “If airlines consistently lose money on a route, they will withdraw, which is frequent. It’s an economic reality for efficient airline operations.”
Arroyo suggests travelers stay informed about flights and fares when planning their trips. He advised passengers to research upcoming routes before booking. For those traveling to the Middle East, Arroyo recommends monitoring flight changes closely and having a backup plan.
“If you plan to travel to the Middle East, particularly the Gulf region, stay alert,” advised Arroyo. “Regularly check the airline’s website and be prepared to secure prices or explore alternative plans if cancellations seem likely.”
