Late-Night Uber Ride Raises Concerns Over Passenger Safety

1 hour ago 0

Concerns about passenger safety during late-night rides surfaced as a woman’s TikTok video detailed an uncomfortable Uber experience. Around 3 a.m., the woman claimed her driver requested a 15 to 20-minute stop at a parking garage to charge his electric vehicle. At the time, the vehicle’s charge was 43% and she was 25 minutes from home.

The situation worsened when the driver missed an exit, causing the woman to question their intended destination. She expressed her discomfort, telling the driver she did not want to enter a random parking lot with him. She eventually ended the trip and contacted the police.

Uber responded to Fox News Digital, stating it investigated the incident and took appropriate action. The company emphasized the importance of safety features in their app, including an emergency button, GPS tracking, and trip-sharing capabilities.

Dillon Abend, founder and CEO of rideshare safety app 3rd-i, noted how changes in a route can cause anxiety, especially for solo travelers at night. Abend shared that many college students have experienced discomfort during rideshare trips. He advised sharing one’s location with trusted contacts to enhance safety.

Seymour Josephson of the What’s My Name Foundation has worked with Uber and Lyft since 2020 to promote rideshare safety. The initiative was spurred by the tragic death of his daughter, Samantha Josephson, who mistakenly entered a vehicle she thought was her Uber.

The foundation urges following the “SAMI” steps: stop before entering a vehicle, ask the driver “What’s my name?”, match the vehicle’s license plate, and inform someone of your trip details. They also introduced a four-digit PIN to verify the correct vehicle.

Seymour Josephson highlighted the importance of ensuring passengers enter the right vehicle, not discouraging rideshare use but seeking a safer experience for everyone.
