This summer, I visited a landowner at the edge of a hayfield. Her parents cleared this land over 60 years ago. As the wind tussled her grey hair, she surveyed her farmland with a thoughtful gaze. Many farms nearby have been changed into gravel pits and subdivisions, reducing the land available for agriculture.

Alaska’s soil is limited in its ability to consistently produce food. The transformation of agricultural land into other purposes poses a threat to food production. Preserving farmland is crucial for maintaining the region’s food supply.

Landowners face challenges as economic pressures drive land conversion. The need for land conservation in Alaska is increasingly vital to protect future food security. Promoting sustainable practices can help in supporting agriculture and balancing development needs.
