Karl Smesko’s Transition from FGCU to WNBA Success

1 hour ago 0

Karl Smesko achieved significant success with the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) women’s basketball team. Despite building a strong program, he opted to take on a new challenge in the WNBA.

When Smesko started at FGCU, the team was in Division II. By the time he left to lead the Atlanta Dream, FGCU had become a top contender in Division I women’s basketball. Under his leadership, the team consistently excelled in making 3-pointers, achieved eight 30-win seasons, and participated in the NCAA tournament 10 times. However, he never secured an NCAA Division I championship.

Smesko’s move to the Atlanta Dream seemed timely. He might have felt he had reached the peak of his achievements at FGCU. Now, leading the Atlanta Dream, Smesko has seen the team achieve consecutive 30-win seasons. After a first-round playoff exit last year, his team has made its way to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013.

During a media interaction, Smesko expressed that the professional level offered a more balanced playing field, increasing the likelihood of winning a championship, which appealed to him.

The 2026 WNBA Finals features a contest between two second-year coaches: Smesko for Atlanta and Natalie Nakase for the recently established Golden State Valkyries. The Valkyries have shown strong form against the Dream, sweeping them this season.

Dream player Angel Reese praised Smesko’s coaching. “He’s a coach that believes in you and knows what’s best,” Reese said, acknowledging his impact on her career and contributions to the team’s success.

Smesko’s journey from FGCU left a legacy. He handed over his coaching duties at FGCU to Chelsea Lyles, his long-time assistant, and she guided the team to the NCAA Tournament, continuing the winning tradition. Lyles and others with connections to FGCU joined Smesko in Atlanta, a factor he credits for the team’s cohesion and success.

The WNBA Finals move to Chase Center in San Francisco, where Atlanta and Golden State will clash in Game 1 on Oct. 17.
