Elon Musk revealed a Tesla Roadster capable of hovering above the ground at a SpaceX facility in Texas on Thursday. This demonstration received widespread attention, particularly on the social media platform X, where reactions from politicians, celebrities, and Tesla enthusiasts likened the vehicle to something from science fiction.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Kari Lake, and Spencer Pratt were among those amazed by the vehicle’s apparent ability to lift off and navigate above the ground. The video showcasing this gained 1.7 million views swiftly.
Details of the ‘Flying’ Roadster
The footage stunned social media users. Musk has, however, been hinting for years that the next-generation Tesla Roadster could integrate a SpaceX-inspired thruster package, blurring the line between a car and an aircraft. He previously mentioned that the vehicle might hover and make short jumps using cold-gas thrusters, foreshadowing Thursday’s dramatic display.
The next-generation Roadster was introduced during a live-streamed event from the SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas. The presentation featured Musk along with Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen and vice president of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy.
During the event, Musk said attendees would witness “some crazy stuff” emerging from the collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. He referred to Tesla as the world’s best car company and SpaceX as the world’s best rocket company. “It’s better than any James Bond car,” Musk asserted.
Musk acknowledged that “success is not guaranteed.” He expressed confidence in the vehicle’s performance but reassured attendees about their safety: “Excitement is 100 percent guaranteed.” He admitted the vehicle would defy physics and might not be “optimized for safety.”
Tesla announced the Roadster can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than one second. Production is expected to begin in 2028, nearly a decade after the redesigned Roadster was first unveiled.
Potential Cost of a Hovering Tesla
Pricing has not been updated following Thursday’s reveal. Initially, Tesla listed the base Roadster at $200,000, with a limited “Founders Series” model priced at $250,000. Experts anticipate a substantial increase due to delays, inflation, and the SpaceX package.
Road Usage Concerns
Uncertainty remains over the potential use of this vehicle on public roads. Experts suggest a vehicle capable of hovering would likely face scrutiny from federal regulators. Prior reporting indicated that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) typically classifies any vehicle flying above the ground as an aircraft. Rules exist for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), suggesting potential limitations on Roadster’s aerial functions.
The FAA imposed flight restrictions around Tesla’s Texas demonstration site before the unveiling, hinting that regulations may already be in preparation for this unique test.
Musk’s Long-Standing Promise of a Flying Roadster
Thursday’s demonstration represents another fulfillment of Musk’s long-standing promises. Since the 2017 unveiling of the second-generation Roadster, Musk has promoted a SpaceX package using rocket technology-inspired cold-gas thrusters. Over the years, Musk has proposed the system could enable hovering and short jumps, offering acceleration beyond what conventional cars can achieve. While skepticism persisted due to engineering and regulatory challenges, supporters have defended Musk’s reputation for realizing seemingly improbable projects including reusable rockets and widespread electric vehicle adoption.
Another Ambitious Project from Musk
The Roadster demonstration adds to Musk’s portfolio of ambitious projects. Through SpaceX, Musk pioneered reusable orbital rockets and expanded the Starlink satellite network. Tesla pushed electric vehicles into the mainstream with software-driven car updates. His companies explore areas ranging from humanoid robots to brain-computer interfaces.
Whether the Roadster becomes a practical flying vehicle remains uncertain. However, the reaction from many figures on X demonstrates that the demonstration achieved its immediate purpose: creating a belief among viewers that they had witnessed a vision of the future.
