The Bend-La Pine Schools district in Oregon is grappling with deep sorrow following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of three young students and a teacher. The district expressed immense gratitude towards the courageous actions of educators and staff during the attack.

“Our hearts are broken,” the district shared in a social media statement. They commended the brave response of a teacher and staff member at the school.

Among the victims was Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old special education teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School. Lambert had begun her teaching career at the district only this fall. She was remembered for the light she brought to her “students, family, and our community,” and will be deeply missed.

An inclusion educational assistant, Becky Drury, sustained injuries in the attack and is currently recovering. The district noted, “We continue to wrap our arms around Becky Drury.” They also acknowledged a learning specialist who showed extraordinary bravery by directly confronting the shooter.

Rhoam Summer, 5, was one of the three children who lost their lives, alongside two others aged 8 and 11, whose names remain undisclosed by request of their families. A 7-year-old girl was injured, as was Drury. Both are recovering, said local police.

The tragic event has shaken the Bend community, situated about 170 miles south of Portland. Residents have gathered at the school, mourning the victims and creating a sidewalk memorial with flowers, prayers, and messages of support written in chalk.

Kaylub Giamanco, 36, has been hailed as a hero for his role in stopping the attacker. On a lunch break, Giamanco noticed the teenage shooter entering the school with a shotgun. Retrieving a legally secured .40-caliber pistol from his car, he pursued the assailant and shot him, preventing further casualties.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the swift actions of both citizens and school staff. An unnamed teacher was noted for confronting the gunman by throwing a cellphone at him and attempting to tackle him, actions that Chief Krantz described as “true heroism.” This courageous stand was instrumental in minimizing further bloodshed.

As the community mourns, the tragic events have underscored the valiant efforts of teachers and citizens alike in the face of danger.
