52 minutes ago 0

A few anti-aircraft guns and part of the USS Indiana, including the mast, stand outside Memorial Stadium on Indiana University’s campus in Bloomington. These serve as a tribute to the Indiana residents who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

The presence of the military is vital at Indiana University. The university honors its military history not only with displays like those outside the stadium but also by maintaining detailed records of military service. The Memorial Student Union houses a unique piece of history showcasing this respect.

The Golden Book: A Memorial to Military Service

The Golden Book at Indiana University is a special 152-page registry listing men and women connected to the school who have served in the military. This registry dates back to 1898 and is displayed in a clear plastic box within a dedicated room for public viewing. It holds names from various conflicts including the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War II.

The initiative began with the Indiana Daily Student publishing lists of military service participants starting with the Spanish-American War. The university’s website notes that the book includes the names of veterans and donors to the Memorial Fund, which funded significant campus buildings honoring these individuals.

In 2016, a digital version of the Golden Book expanded to include over 25,000 names. This effort ensures these memories are preserved and accessible to future generations.

Zainab Diouf, an Indiana University student and National Guard member, highlights the uniqueness of the Golden Book, encouraging fellow students to appreciate it.

Support for Veterans and Military Students

Indiana University doesn’t overlook its veterans, offering a comprehensive Center for Veterans and Military Students. This center provides assistance with benefits, scholarships, and career services, creating a supportive environment for military students returning to education.

Vasiliios Koultourides, who is part of the Indiana National Guard, praises the campus support structure: “The center is a great space for studying and connecting with others who share similar experiences.”

Military Presence in Campus Activities

Indiana University integrates military students into campus life, particularly through athletics. Most sports teams host ‘Salute to Service’ games annually. During football games, military students participate actively, engaging the crowd and performing pushups after touchdowns.

This involvement underscores the university’s commitment to honoring its veterans. The integration of the ROTC and veteran students into campus culture reflects the appreciation and recognition of their service.

The commitment of Indiana University to its military community is evident in everyday campus life. Students like Koultourides feel valued both as students and as servicemembers.
