Georgia Faces Unranked Loss and Falls From Top Spot

1 hour ago 0

Being ranked No. 1 in the country may come with unexpected challenges. Georgia, having held the top spot, experienced a surprising defeat against an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks. Auburn managed a 27-24 victory over Georgia at Sanford Stadium, marking the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks.

Georgia had previously maintained a winning streak against unranked teams, achieving 53 victories in a row before this defeat. The match started with Georgia leading 14-0, scoring early in the first quarter. However, their offense faltered, resulting in three punts, a missed field goal, and an interception over the next five drives.

Auburn capitalized on Georgia’s offensive struggles, scoring 24 unanswered points. Entering the fourth quarter with a 10-point deficit, Georgia managed to reduce it with a field goal and forced Auburn to punt twice. A subsequent 13-play, 94-yard drive tied the game for Georgia.

Despite regaining momentum, Georgia’s fortune changed abruptly when Gunnar Stockton lost a fumble, giving Auburn possession at its own 44-yard line with all three timeouts. Auburn advanced 22 yards over three carries and benefited from a roughing the passer penalty. Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal sealed the upset victory.

The defeat highlights shifts in the college football rankings after Texas fell to No. 7 following their loss to Oklahoma. Georgia’s loss at home to an unranked opponent is their first under coach Kirby Smart since 2019. With a record now at 5-1, Georgia had secured the top spot by defeating Alabama previously, but contenders like Notre Dame, Miami, and Ohio State may now vie for No. 1.

The Bulldogs will take a break next week before facing Florida, who recently upset Texas in Austin. Auburn, meanwhile, prepares to host No. 22 LSU in their upcoming match.
