In Foxborough, Massachusetts, the Chicago Fire secured a playoff spot Saturday night, marking a significant achievement. This is the first time they have gained a postseason berth in consecutive seasons since their streak from 2007 to 2009.
Despite a 1-0 loss to the New England Revolution, the Fire managed to lock in a second consecutive playoff appearance under coach Gregg Berhalter. Their qualification was aided by Orlando City’s 4-1 victory over D.C. United the same night.
Currently, the Fire (14-10-6, 48 points) are positioned fourth in the Eastern Conference with four regular-season games left. Last year, they returned to the playoffs after a hiatus since 2017. Notably, they secured their first postseason win since 2009 with a 3-1 triumph over Orlando City in the Eastern Conference wild-card match.
In the Saturday match, Matt Polster’s first-half goal and Matt Turner’s goalkeeping were pivotal for the Revolution’s victory. Polster, assisted by Carles Gil and Peyton Miller, scored his second goal of the season in the 26th minute. Turner successfully defended his goal against six shots, achieving his sixth clean sheet in 30 starts. Remarkably, he had only two shutouts in his first 112 starts for the club last year.
Chris Brady, the Fire’s goalkeeper, made three saves. The Fire are currently on a two-game losing streak after a previous three-match winning run. Their upcoming match is scheduled on Saturday against Atlanta United.
