Backlash at DSA Co-chair’s Comments on Israel-Hamas Conflict

The co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Megan Romer, faces criticism for her remarks on the October 7 attack led by Hamas in Israel. During an interview with David Remnick from The New Yorker, Romer called the massacre ‘largely inevitable.’

Remnick questioned Romer on whether she would have joined democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier at an anti-Israel, pro-Hamas rally held the day after the attack. Romer replied that she likely would have attended, noting, “I probably would have.” She explained her view that the attack was a consequence of dire conditions in Gaza.

“If you put people in an open-air concentration camp and deprive them of rights, dignity, food, and safety, you have to expect they will not endure that for long,” Romer stated.

Zionist Organization of America’s National President, Morton A. Klein, also contributed his thoughts. He agreed in part with Romer’s statement but cited different reasons, accusing groups like Hamas and allies such as Qatar and Iran of provoking the violence.

Klein highlighted external support for Hamas and other groups, saying, “When Qatar and Iran provided arms and shelter, and helped plan attacks, October 7 was the result.” He noted educational influences, stating, “When UNRWA teaches children to hate and employs Hamas terrorists as teachers, October 7 is the result.”

Klein emphasized preparing for possible future attacks by advocating for Israeli security measures, including maintaining a buffer zone in Gaza and disarming Hamas.

The ADL (Anti-Defamation League) responded to Romer’s comments with strong disapproval. In a public statement, they emphasized that such rhetoric could incite further risk to Jewish communities.

The ADL remarked, “Romer’s comments go beyond criticizing government policy and put every Jewish American at risk.”

They condemned Romer’s remarks as justifying the atrocities committed on October 7, categorizing them as a ‘revolt’ without just cause.

Additionally, Rabbi Yaakov Menken from the Coalition for Jewish Values criticized the DSA as antisemitic. Menken asserted that Romer used misleading narratives to rationalize unjust actions.

As DSA continues to grow in membership and political influence, the organization’s stance and remarks, like those from Romer, draw significant public scrutiny and debate.
