The Blackhawks Fall to the Stars with Defensive Struggles

2 hours ago 0

The Chicago Blackhawks struggled against the Dallas Stars in their first matchup this season, losing 4-0 at the United Center with 18,233 fans in attendance. Despite winning two out of three games against their Central Division rivals last season, the Hawks couldn’t maintain their momentum.

Coach Jeff Blashill emphasized this before the game, reflecting on past performances and disappointing results, such as the 6-0 loss to the Utah Mammoth earlier in the month. Their loss to the Stars dropped them to a 3-6-0 record as they continue their seven-game homestand.

Captain Connor Bedard expressed a need for improvement, saying, “We got five days (off), kind of weird, but we can practice, work on stuff and get better.” The team was unable to capitalize on scoring chances, especially in the first period, despite facing only 12 shots against their 5.

A critical moment came when Jason Robertson’s goal for the Stars was disallowed for being offside, keeping both teams scoreless in the first period. Bedard noted, “We got to create more chances… if they go in, it obviously changes the game.” However, the Hawks continued to falter.

In the second period, the Stars found their rhythm. Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger secured 19 saves for his third shutout in six starts. At 4:58 in the second, Robertson scored, and Arttu Hyry added a second goal at 14:10, extending the Stars’ lead to 2-0. Hyry and Roope Hintz scored again in the third period, finalizing the 4-0 victory.

The Hawks were outshot 32-19, showcasing their struggles in defensive zones and puck management. Their poor decisions and mistakes allowed the Stars to exploit weaknesses effectively. “We made too many mistakes out there with pucks passes all around the ice,” defenseman Alex Vlasic stated, acknowledging the skill of the Stars’ forwards.

Blashill commented on Oettinger’s performance, critiquing the Hawks for not challenging the Stars’ net enough: “They boxed out, slashed, fronted a lot of those pucks or we just didn’t have much (of a) look at the goalie.” The Stars played a smarter and more controlled game.

Anton Frondell, despite leading the team in assists and points, only played for 12:40 with a tough showing at the faceoff circle. “I didn’t think he had it tonight,” Blashill remarked, urging improvement and better performance in future games.

As they face playoff-caliber teams, the Hawks’ struggles against smart and disciplined teams highlight areas needing urgent attention. “Their top lines or top players are making smart decisions with the puck,” Vlasic noted, indicating the kind of strategic play the Hawks must adopt to turn their season around.
