A serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has resulted in fatalities and injuries. Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the situation on Saturday, noting the base is one of the country’s busiest military installations.
McGuinty did not specify the number of casualties but reported both fatalities and injuries. He told reporters, “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.”
At least one person has died, and 34 firefighters and emergency personnel have been injured in a major incident at a Staten Island shipyard in New York, reported by FDNY.
A fire resulting from the incident was still active on Saturday evening. McGuinty said, “I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory.” The fire extended beyond the base’s perimeter, affecting the surrounding area of Wainwright.
The municipality announced that despite the fire’s spread, no evacuation orders were currently in place. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the situation on social media, expressing condolences and concern for those affected.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic,” impacting military personnel. The Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and local emergency response teams collaborated on managing the situation, as reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
McGuinty stated that multiple government levels, including public safety partners, were working to provide necessary support in response to the incident.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, about 130 miles east of Edmonton, had approximately 1,310 military and civilian personnel in 2021. The town of Wainwright has around 6,600 residents.
The cause of the incident was not immediately clear.
