Kevin Kisner Questions Rory McIlroy’s Intentions in India

6 hours ago 0

Kevin Kisner, a four-time PGA Tour winner, has publicly challenged Rory McIlroy’s sincerity about promoting golf while playing in India. The allegations arose during the buildup to the DP World India Championship, where McIlroy spoke at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi. There, he expressed hopes that his participation in the event would aid in growing the sport in India.

Kisner, however, was skeptical of these claims. He suggested that McIlroy’s appearance was motivated by the promise of a substantial appearance fee, instead of genuine interest in expanding golf. During an episode of the Fore Play podcast, Kisner remarked, “That is such a dog sh-t comment, but I guess for the right price, we could all say that comment.” He further asserted, “He doesn’t want to globally expand in India; he wants to get his 10 million bucks and go play in India.”

Kisner criticized what he perceived as scripted remarks given by players when participating in international tournaments. He noted, “They always seem to say the right things while they’re over there.” He humorously added that he’d do the same if given the chance. Kisner found it amusing how top players show up for lucrative events yet skip playing on world-renowned courses.

Following the tournament, where McIlroy finished T-42, he addressed Kisner’s comments. Speaking to The Mirror, McIlroy stated, “I didn’t see that. I don’t know why me being in India would make Kis need to comment on that.” He acknowledged receiving an appearance fee, but emphasized a genuine interest in promoting golf in a country with a rapidly growing middle class.

McIlroy’s response highlighted that dual motives can coexist. He pointed out that the Indian market, with its large middle class, represents a vast opportunity for golf. Kisner, in his comments, had also noted he would play in such events if assured a guaranteed payment.
