NFL officials often face harsh criticism and even suspensions. Recently, public discourse has not been kind to them. However, they too deserve respect and compassion, as demonstrated during Sunday’s game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans in London.
During the first quarter, umpire Larry Smith was carrying out his duties at Wembley Stadium when he slipped on the wet turf and fell. He managed to stand back up but then collapsed again, seemingly due to a buckled knee. Medical staff quickly attended to Smith, reminding everyone of the humanity behind the officiating role.
“We forget that these individuals, frequently critiqued by coaches, players, and fans, are human too.”
While Smith lay on the field, line judge Carl Johnson approached him, took a knee, removed his cap, and began to pray for his colleague. This act of solidarity is mirrored by players on the field when teammates are injured. This year, similar scenes unfolded when Jaxson Dart of the Giants and Jayden Daniels of the Commanders were injured, and when Packers players prayed for Jayden Reed after he suffered a neck injury.
Smith had to be taken off the field with a lower-leg injury, according to an NFL Network report. The officiating crew adjusted their formation to continue the game with six officials instead of the typical seven.
This incident offers a poignant reminder of the human side of NFL officials amidst other recent news, such as suspensions following Jeff Seeman’s and Adrian Hill’s actions on October 5. Despite controversies, officiating crews are made up of individuals who support each other, as shown in this touching moment.
