U.S.-Ukraine Relations Face Tensions Over Intelligence and Starlink

5 hours ago 0

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following Zelensky’s remarks about a halt in U.S. intelligence sharing during Russian missile strikes. The comments were made in separate interviews on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. This occurred amid escalating tensions between Zelensky and the Trump administration regarding U.S. support for Ukraine and Trump’s stance on Russia.

Zelensky told moderator Kristen Welker that U.S. intelligence sharing was ‘blocked for some period of time’ before resuming. He expressed gratitude for the restored support but noted that the interruption deprived Ukraine of critical intelligence during Russian missile attacks. While Ukraine relied on European partners for intelligence during this gap, Zelensky highlighted the unique capabilities of U.S. intelligence in detecting Russian missile launches.

Bessent, in his interview with Welker, refuted the claim that the Trump administration was responsible for the disruption. He stated that both President Trump and Secretary Rubio denied any administration involvement. Bessent advised Zelensky to be cautious with such accusations.

Though pressed for details on the cause of the disruption, Bessent said he was unaware of the specifics. When asked whether the U.S. considers Ukraine an ally, Bessent avoided a direct answer, instead pointing to continued U.S. support to Ukraine. Zelensky, when asked about Trump’s alliance with Ukraine, responded cautiously, showing a desire to maintain trust in American support.

U.S. intelligence remains crucial for Ukraine’s defense against Russian missiles, as European allies have limited capabilities in this regard. Reports of disruptions in intelligence sharing surfaced earlier, with Ukrainian officials mentioning a lack of warning about missile launches. Some reports suggest potential political influences over intelligence cooperation.

Zelensky also raised concerns about restrictions on Starlink, a satellite network crucial for Ukrainian forces. He claimed these limitations originated from a U.S. government decision and impacted Ukraine’s drone operations. Bessent reiterated Trump’s denial of any administration involvement in this decision.

The dispute over intelligence sharing and Starlink restrictions highlights the growing rift between Trump and Zelensky, centered on Russia and energy policy. Trump’s recent statements show a preference for dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Zelensky, further straining U.S.-Ukraine relations. Trump’s decisions to ease some economic pressures on Russia, including an agreement to increase Russian diesel supplies, have added to the tension.

Bessent defended these moves, stating that only the diesel embargo was lifted to help address global fuel shortages.
