Octavia Returns to the Upper East Side with a New Family

1 month ago 0

Good morning. It’s Wednesday. Exciting news greets us today from a well-known Fifth Avenue address, made famous by the celebrity red-tailed hawk, Pale Male. While details of the resolution to the Long Island Rail Road strike are circulating, attention shifts to a fascinating development in the birding world.

Pale Male, celebrated for his residency at a Fifth Avenue location and his vibrant life, was a notable red-tailed hawk until his passing in 2023. Now, Octavia, his last known mate, has made a return with a fresh chapter in her life. She is seen back at their well-remembered nest, accompanied by a new partner and nurturing a recently spotted chick.

Stella Hamilton, a dedicated birder who has followed Octavia’s journey since 2014, observed these intriguing changes. Even during the Pale Male era, she noted Octavia’s covert meetings with other hawks. Hamilton shared insights on Octavia’s selective nature post-Pale Male, saying she was choosy in finding the right mate. “Every year she would have a boyfriend, but it wouldn’t last,” Hamilton mentioned. The reasons ranged from unsatisfactory nest-building skills to other factors.

The identity of Octavia’s new mate remains unnamed within the bird-watching community. Yet, their recent activities, typical of new parental duties, such as fetching food — a rodent or pigeon — indicate their settled partnership. Observers have also managed to spot a small, downy chick, indicating the couple’s new addition.

Octavia, already known to have offspring with Pale Male back in 2013, surprises birders like D. Bruce Yolton with this new event. Yolton, who fondly remembers past experiences with Pale Male, humorously refers to having “nestalgia.” He admits he expected Octavia to have passed her chick-rearing days.
