On October 19, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a women’s health division within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a Women’s Health Task Force at the White House. The signing ceremony took place in the Rose Garden, with First Lady Melania Trump joining the president.
The executive order outlines five key objectives:
- Directing research funding towards diseases predominantly affecting women.
- Utilizing artificial intelligence to hasten medical discoveries.
- Speeding up the introduction of new therapeutics for women.
- Ensuring medical breakthroughs for women are affordable.
- Encouraging open discussions about women’s health issues.
In her speech, the first lady expressed optimism, saying, “This is a transformative moment for women in America. Starting today, we will improve women’s health. Our generation will strive to find cures that let women live healthy, full lives.” She was credited by President Trump with the concept of establishing a women’s health division. Although her signature on the executive order holds no legal authority, she added it following the president’s signing.
President Trump remarked, “Think of it, a women’s health division. Who wouldn’t want it? Melania discovered they don’t have it.” During the announcement, the president hinted at future advancements in women’s healthcare but didn’t provide specifics on funding or affordability measures.
This announcement follows the news of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles’s cancer recovery. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in March, Wiles announced she was cancer-free in September. President Trump commended Wiles during the event, recognizing her resilience and commitment to women’s health improvement.
White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster stated that the task force aims to “address critical research gaps and enhance women’s healthcare across all life stages, focusing on prevalent health issues.”
