Growing Concern Over Cancer Rates Among Iowa Voters

3 hours ago 0

Fox News anchor Jon Scott discussed with Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel the increasing concern among Iowa voters about cancer rates. Iowa’s cancer rates surpass the national average by 10%, affecting prostate, breast, colorectal, melanoma, and lung cancers, despite decreasing cancer onset in all but three states.

Iowa’s significant production of corn and soybeans, along with hog farming, contributes to nitrogen runoff, affecting river water used for drinking. Though the EPA has not classified nitrates from fertilizers and animal waste as carcinogens, these can transform into probable carcinogens inside the human body through nitrosation. Additionally, there are concerns involving pesticides and ‘forever chemicals.’

The Make America Healthy Again initiative, spearheaded by HHS Secretary RFK Jr., emphasizes reducing exposure to these chemicals, gaining bipartisan support. MAHA Action President Tony Lyons emphasized the critical need to reduce chemical exposure, citing studies linking contaminated water with nitrates from fertilizers and manure to cancer. Other studies associate pesticides with increased risks of colorectal, bladder, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and other cancers.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn highlighted the significance of discussing water quality and nitrate load in cancer conversations. He emphasized that irrespective of political affiliation, everyone drinks the same water. State-funded research at the University of Iowa attributes most of Iowa’s elevated cancer rates to demographic and behavioral factors like smoking and binge drinking.

The University of Iowa has intensified its cancer research due to the rising cancer rates. A notable case is Linda Jacobs, 64, who benefited from medical research. After a bilateral mastectomy and radiation for recurrent breast cancer, she faced a severe angiosarcoma. Dr. Mohammed Milhem treated her tumor with a genetically altered herpes virus, leading to a miraculous recovery.

Preventing cancer through environmental detoxification and lifestyle changes is essential. The focus remains on reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and ensuring healthier living conditions.
