Democrats Rally in Virginia, Citing Iran War as Key Election Issue

1 day ago 0

Three Democratic politicians from various regions of Virginia united on Monday to campaign together. During a rally in Henrico County, they highlighted the war in Iran as a significant topic in the upcoming elections, emphasizing its repercussions beyond the gasoline prices.

The war, which has disturbed oil markets, poses challenges for Republicans in the midterm elections. In Virginia, a state that heavily relies on the military, the implications of the conflict extend further.

“This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties,” commented former representative Elaine Luria at the rally in eastern Henrico County, near Richmond.

Luria aims to unseat Rep. Jen Kiggans, a fellow Navy veteran, in the 2nd District of Virginia. This district encompasses Virginia Beach and several major Navy installations. Similarly, Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor, challenging Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, mentioned her opponent’s backing of the war. Former representative Tom Perriello, running against Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, seeks to reclaim the seat he lost previously, partly motivated by a desire to terminate the war.

Aiding these Virginia Democrats on Monday was former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, a military veteran and potential Democratic presidential contender for 2028. Buttigieg emphasized the strategic significance of Virginia in securing a Democratic majority in the House, noting that the party requires a net gain of four seats.

“The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” he told the crowd of over 200 attendees who supported the three candidates with signboards.
