Pete Alonso attempted a daring play against the Detroit Tigers, but it did not go as planned.
In the opening game of a doubleheader, Dillon Dingler of the Tigers hit a ball toward Alonso during the fourth inning. Rather than securing a straightforward out, Alonso chose to allow the ball to drop with a runner already on first base.
The decision quickly proved to be a mistake. Alonso misjudged the bounce and his throw to second base was off-target. Both runners advanced safely, and Alonso, a five-time All-Star, received an error on the play.
If Alonso had succeeded, he might have been praised for his inventive decision. Unfortunately, it backfired, leading to Detroit adding two runs in the inning. Despite this setback, Baltimore rebounded to secure a 5-3 win, ending a three-game losing streak.
Alonso’s performance in the game was notably poor. Besides the error, he failed to hit successfully in four attempts at bat. Despite hitting 10 home runs and 32 RBIs this season, Alonso’s inconsistency at bat persists, with a .224 average.
Earlier this year, Alonso committed to a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles, earning $31 million annually.
