Cuban-American lawmakers have issued warnings about Cuba’s escalating humanitarian and economic crisis, suggesting the island is nearing collapse. They believe that the Trump administration has a limited opportunity to intensify pressure on Havana, potentially reshaping Western Hemisphere’s future.
“We have never been this close to seeing a change and this regime actually being ousted,” said Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla.
During an interview, Gimenez expressed optimism for change in Cuba.
Representatives Carlos Gimenez, Maria Salazar, and Mario Diaz-Balart, all from Florida, discussed the issue on Fox News’ “My View with Lara Trump.” They emphasized the severe blackouts, energy shortages, and increasing unrest in Cuba. They framed these issues as not only a humanitarian crisis but also a growing national security threat to the United States.
“We’re only 90 miles away from Miami, the city that I represent,” Salazar stated, noting the closeness as a concern.
Diaz-Balart stressed that Cuba’s proximity poses a security threat to the U.S., highlighting the presence of drones and fugitives harbored by the Cuban regime. He praised President Trump’s attention to this threat.
“The reason we are so hopeful is because this president is not gonna continue to allow a regime 90 miles away…” Diaz-Balart explained.
Salazar pointed to the administration’s actions in confronting hostile regimes in the region as evidence of their commitment.
“Look what he did with Maduro,” she said, referencing Venezuela.
The lawmakers continue to seek greater involvement from the U.S. government in aiding Cuban citizens and addressing threats from the regime.
