1 month ago 0

Europe is experiencing an unexpected heatwave, shattering temperature records across the continent. On Monday, similar records were broken in the United Kingdom. Governments are issuing warnings after heat-related incidents were reported, including fatalities at sports events in France.

French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed condolences for the family of a runner who died during a Paris race on Sunday. According to Le Parisien, the 53-year-old man experienced a heart attack in the city’s 20th arrondissement. Despite firefighters’ efforts, they could not revive him. While it remains unclear if the heat directly caused his death, Ferrari hinted at a possible connection. Afternoon temperatures in Paris climbed to 32°C (90°F).

The events that occurred today during running races are a reminder that practicing sports in extreme heat requires absolute vigilance, Ferrari stated. My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the runner who died in Paris, as well as with the people who were treated by emergency services.

In Lyon, local media reported the death of another individual during a sporting event on the same day, possibly due to heat stroke.

The national weather organization, Meteo France, announced that temperatures for May are reaching unprecedented highs, exceeding 30°C (86°F) throughout much of the country, with predictions of continuing high temperatures.

On Monday, the United Kingdom recorded its highest-ever May temperature. Several areas declared a heatwave, with temperatures peaking at 34.8°C (94.6°F) in Kew Gardens, southwest London, surpassing the previous record of 32.8°C (91.4°F) set in 1922 and repeated in 1944.
