Rosie O’Donnell Opens Up About Facelift and Personal Journey

1 month ago 0

After losing 50 pounds, Rosie O’Donnell underwent a facelift, despite her previous vows to avoid plastic surgery. The comedian shared her experience through a candid essay, expressing feelings of guilt and shame following the procedure. On her Substack, she revealed, “I used to feel very strongly about facelifts, not casually, but morally. I believed it was a betrayal of feminism, of aging, of women worldwide. Then, I lost 50 pounds.”

O’Donnell decided on the facelift in January, stating that it wasn’t about wrinkles, but what she described as gravity impacting her appearance. “I’d look in the mirror and think, this isn’t aging, this is melting with intention,” she wrote. She tried to embrace it as natural and earned but struggled with the acceptance of her appearance.

When O’Donnell researched facelifts, her 13-year-old child, Clay, strongly opposed the idea. Clay mentioned the impact on young women who look up to her and expressed that it might affect their respect for her. O’Donnell reflected on this, seeing her younger self in Clay. She postponed her decision for several months, contemplating the implications.

Ultimately, O’Donnell came to the realization that her body should not be confined to any ideal, even if it aligns with feminist values. “That’s still not freedom,” she concluded. After much thought, she proceeded with the facelift, seeking a balance of looking like herself, but with less of a haunted appearance.

After the procedure, O’Donnell noted that no one had commented on her changed appearance, not even her teenage daughter. She viewed the outcome as positive, feeling that she was no longer in conflict with her reflection. However, she dealt with lingering feelings of guilt over the cost and the perceived extravagance of the surgery.

Reflecting on her privileged position in life, she admitted the facelift cost more than she had ever spent on a car. “The things I have – earned some say, but it’s the gross excess that wounds me,” she confessed, preparing herself for future challenges and embracing who she is today.
