Illinois State Sandwich Debate: Horseshoe vs. Italian Beef

1 month ago 0

In Springfield, the hometown of the horseshoe sandwich, state Representative Rick Ryan from Evergreen Park made a bold appeal. He suggested that the official state sandwich of Illinois should no longer be the horseshoe. Instead, he proposed the Italian beef as a worthy successor. The Italian beef, with its rich flavors and textures when properly seasoned and dipped, deserves recognition.

To reinforce his argument, Ryan enlisted Corey Hendrix, an actor from the FX series ‘The Bear,’ which highlights the cultural significance of Italian beef. This debate echoes a longstanding divide between Chicagoland and downstate Illinois. Although the horseshoe has appeared in notable Chicago locations like TriBecca’s Sandwich Shop, it seems elusive, while the Italian beef remains widespread.

Italian beef spots like Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park offer a high-quality, dipped version worthy of praise. Other notable locations include Al’s #1 and Luke’s, conveniently close to Ryan’s office. Mr. Beef has gained fame, now found at Midway Airport, though its original location at 666 N. Orleans St. provides an authentic experience. As Illinois considers its quintessential sandwich, the Italian beef should reign supreme.

Ryan’s efforts led to a compromise. His bill allowed the horseshoe to retain the title of official open-faced sandwich, though many view it as more akin to a French tartine or Danish smørrebrød than a true sandwich.

Despite this, Italian beef holds a highly regarded status. On Memorial Day, while some beef establishments may close, various Chicago-style food venues remain open. These offer a range of dishes—gyros, brats, Jibaritos, tacos, lemonade, and hand-cut fries—ideal for enjoying a leisure day.
