Marcia Lucas, who received an Oscar for editing the original 1977 ‘Star Wars,’ has passed away at the age of 80. According to a family attorney, Deidre Von Rock, Lucas succumbed to metastatic cancer on Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, California. She was surrounded by her loved ones.
An influential figure in film editing, Marcia Lucas was crucial to the success of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise. She was married to ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas from 1969 to 1983. Beyond ‘Star Wars,’ her editing credits include ‘Return of the Jedi,’ as well as the George Lucas-directed films ‘THX 1138’ and ‘American Graffiti.’
She also contributed to the editing of director Martin Scorsese’s projects in the 1970s, such as ‘Taxi Driver,’ ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,’ and ‘New York, New York.’
Often referred to as the unsung hero of ‘Star Wars,’ Marcia Lucas was instrumental in refining the film’s plot. She suggested that Obi-Wan Kenobi should play a significant role in his battle with Darth Vader, later becoming a guiding spirit for Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill. She skillfully edited raw footage, including the complex rebel attack on the Death Star. George Lucas highlighted her ingenuity in a Rolling Stone interview, stating, ‘We had 40,000 feet of dialogue footage just of pilots, and she had to integrate all that with the fighting.’
After their divorce, she married Tom Rodrigues, a production manager at Skywalker Ranch, from 1983 to 1993. She leaves behind her daughters, Amanda Lucas and Amy Soper, and grandchildren Felix Hallikainen, Aeliana Hallikainen, and Knox Soper.
‘Her influence on film is indelible,’ her family said. ‘Those who knew her best will remember her for making life feel more vivid and beautiful. Her work was renowned for its emotional intelligence and ability to bring heart and momentum to the screen.’
