Carson Holmes Leads Libertyville to Success in Baseball Championship

1 month ago 0

Carson Holmes, Libertyville’s senior left fielder, has become an essential figure for the Wildcats, drawing on his experience as a top returnee from the defending Class 4A state champion team. His role extends beyond just playing; he brings invaluable perspective to his less experienced teammates. Holmes is committed to this leadership role, saying, “You want to be that guy when the time comes.”

Libertyville faced a tough match against Stevenson in the Class 4A Hoffman Estates Regional championship game, where Holmes played a critical role. Batting third in the lineup, he reached base four times, leading Libertyville, the top-seeded team, to a 13-3 victory over eighth-seeded Stevenson. Holmes shared his approach, stating, “When things get tough, we’re going to have to rally.”

The game also saw outstanding performance from pitcher Chase Lockwood, a senior right-hander and Illinois State recruit, who pitched four scoreless innings. With this victory, Libertyville will now face fourth-seeded Mundelein in the Sectional semifinals. The Wildcats scored nine runs in the third inning, taking advantage of seven walks, three hit batters, and an error. Holmes contributed with a two-run single during this eruptive inning.

Holmes emphasized the importance of teamwork, noting, “Everybody stayed true to themselves, and nobody went selfish.” He further demonstrated his skill by also getting hit by a pitch and walking twice. Last season, Holmes batted .500 in seven postseason games and hit a home run in the regional final.

According to Libertyville coach Matt Thompson, Holmes’s consistent performance at the third spot in the lineup has been pivotal. “He has a great swing, good hands. Hitting in the three-hole is not easy,” Thompson said, highlighting Holmes’s importance to the team.

This season, Holmes has a batting average of .276 with two home runs and 23 RBIs. Despite facing challenges, he maintains a positive outlook, focused on a “next-game mentality.” Holmes believes in the value of the team over individual success, saying, “If the team wins and you don’t do well, I’m still happy.”

Holmes is a vocal leader on the field, especially in the outfield, as noted by fellow senior right fielder Jack Cenar. “You’ll always hear him communicating with us, helping direct us and making sure we’re making the right plays,” Cenar said.

Aside from baseball, Holmes has also proven his leadership on the football field as a two-way starter. Reflecting on his passion for baseball, Holmes remarked, “Playing baseball is the best time of the year.” With the regional victory secured, Libertyville is poised to advance further in the championships. They are ready to push ahead, with Holmes’s leadership and talent as key elements for their continued success.
