WASHINGTON (AP) — Recent developments have added fuel to the controversy surrounding Graham Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign. Reports surfaced that Platner had exchanged sexually explicit text messages with multiple women, an issue his wife addressed over the weekend.
Graham Platner, who is campaigning to secure the Democratic nomination in Maine, aims to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. This race is one of several crucial contests for Democrats as they seek to gain control of the Senate.
On Saturday night, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, shared a video on the social media platform X. In the video, she refrained from directly addressing the texts and labeled the ongoing media coverage as “gossip.” She remarked, “Being married is hard,” highlighting the challenges of their relationship while pacing along a road in a selfie-style recording. She expressed her disapproval of the media’s focus, stating, “I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip.” Gertner emphasized, “No marriage is perfect, and I don’t want a perfect marriage, I want my marriage.”
The Wall Street Journal initially reported that Gertner informed Platner’s campaign about the text messages in August. She wanted to ensure they did not present a political risk for the candidate. Aides eventually concluded that the messages were a private matter managed by the couple, who married in 2023.
In the video, Gertner mentioned that their marriage counselor, along with their individual counselors, supported them, reinforcing, “Graham and I have a great marriage.”
Platner, an oyster farmer and combat veteran, has faced other controversies. He previously had a tattoo identified as a Nazi symbol, which Platner claimed he was unaware of until weeks into his campaign. Further scrutiny arose from now-deleted Reddit posts where he made dismissive comments about military sexual assaults and used homophobic slurs.
Despite these controversies, Platner endured the scrutiny during the Democratic primary against Governor Janet Mills, who eventually withdrew, positioning Platner as the presumptive nominee. The Platner campaign has not yet commented on the recent allegations.
