On Saturday, the Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month was celebrated with enthusiasm at Pacifica Square shopping center in Aurora. This event was organized by Pacifica Square and the Global Friendship Exchange Foundation at 4334 E. New York St., Aurora’s far East Side. Pacifica Square, recognized as the largest Asian-centric shopping and lifestyle hub in the United States, has been hosting cultural events since 2021. Its Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration has grown significantly, according to Pacifica officials.
During the five-hour festival, a wide array of attractions was offered to honor both traditional and modern aspects of culture. These included live performances, food contests, cosplay competitions, as well as art and music displays. Judy Ni, director of real estate for the Windfall Group based in Oak Brook, which developed Pacifica Square, stated that this marks the sixth annual celebration at the center. She emphasized the event’s focus on uniting the community and celebrating diverse cultures.
The event provides an opportunity to come together and celebrate while honoring heritage, said Judy Ni.
This is definitely something we want to continue to host to keep the celebration and heritage alive.
May is recognized as Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, making it an opportune time for such festivities. Participants like Raju Kumal from Aurora, who visited the shopping center with his children, joined in on the celebration. Observing the festivities, Kumal shared, This reflects what we have here right now in Aurora.
Brett Day from Geneva enjoyed sampling various foods at the event. He appreciated the celebration as it offers the community a chance to explore and understand Asian culture through its cuisine. I’m trying some vegetarian food and eager to try more from other food trucks, Day mentioned.
