Senator Bernie Sanders has come to the defense of Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, following reports of sexually explicit texts between Platner and other women early in his marriage. Sanders emphasizes the importance of focusing on critical issues facing working families rather than Platner’s personal life.
Focus on Key Issues
Sanders highlights pressing challenges for families such as unaffordable housing, healthcare, and basic necessities. He argues that these issues should take precedence over discussions about Platner’s marital problems. Sanders wishes the couple well and urges the public to support candidates who challenge economic power structures.
“We got a housing crisis. People can’t afford healthcare, they can’t afford groceries, they can’t afford to fill up their gas tanks,” Sanders stated.
Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, has also publicly supported her husband. In a video statement, she expressed anger over the reports and criticized those spreading gossip rather than focusing on the campaign’s core issues.
Campaign Response
The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal revealed that Gertner informed Platner’s campaign about the texts at the outset of his political campaign. Platner confirmed sending inappropriate texts at the start of his marriage in 2023. He acknowledged the strain it caused but stressed their relationship has grown stronger through counseling.
“Amy and I went through something hard — because of me,” Platner admitted.
Platner ties his campaign message to broader community concerns, stressing that economic improvement and Maine’s progress matter more than past personal issues.
Political Endorsements and Reactions
Fellow politicians like Senator Ruben Gallego also support Platner, noting his transparency and personal growth. Gallego emphasizes the economic challenges facing Americans, suggesting voters prioritize these over personal scandals.
“Gas is still high, food is still high,” Gallego said. “They’re not going to care about text messages.”
Senator Martin Heinrich dismisses the controversy as a distraction more relevant to Washington D.C. than to Maine voters focused on who will support working-class interests.
Platner, endorsed by national figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Ro Khanna, continues to hold favor among many Democratic voters despite previous controversies. Issues surrounding past Reddit posts and a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism have also challenged his campaign. However, he remains a prominent candidate, with Democratic Governor Janet Mills suspending her campaign amid his popularity.
Governor Mills, still listed on the ballot, clarified her position, stating she simply paused active campaigning.
Republican Susan Collins, Platner’s opponent, declined to comment extensively on Platner’s controversies, noting the frequent revelations reflecting on his character.
