The Stanley Cup Final started thrillingly on Tuesday. The Carolina Hurricanes clashed with the Vegas Golden Knights in a dramatic shootout, with Vegas narrowly securing a 5-4 victory.

Carolina took an early lead, scoring first through Nikolaj Ehlers. Ehlers made an impact by adding another goal later in the same period. However, the Golden Knights showed determination, equalizing and moving ahead. Tomas Hertl played a pivotal role, netting the decisive game-winning goal.

This marked his second game-winner in just three matches. Hertl’s recent performance was noteworthy, considering a previous scoring drought that lasted 29 games.

During the playoffs, Hertl struggled with goal-scoring consistency. Former teammate Joe Pavelski expressed surprise upon learning of Hertl’s drought during a series against the Anaheim Ducks. Pavelski, shocked by the statistic, decided to reach out to Hertl with encouragement.

Pavelski shared with NHL.com, “I knew he wasn’t producing a lot, but I mean, I didn’t know how much, I guess. Then I heard one of the announcers say 29 games, and I was like, ‘What?’ But then they said how many chances he’s been getting.”

Pavelski offered simple advice, which Hertl credited for helping him regain his form. “My old teammate called me, Joe Pavelski, and he actually helped me a lot,” Hertl told Sportsnet. “He’s a great goal scorer who has gone through a lot. He kind of called me and talked to me about just what to do, and I think the next day it was done; I got my first goal.”

This encouragement paid off as Hertl scored pivotal goals against the Anaheim Ducks and Avalanche before achieving victory against Carolina.

Vegas needed players to peak at the right moments for their Stanley Cup ambitions. Hertl’s resurgence has been crucial, mirroring Brett Howden’s excellent form. Howden leads with 11 postseason goals, adding depth to Vegas’s forward lineup.

Pavelski, reflecting on his call, stated, “I didn’t do anything special. I just reached out more or less just to check in as a friend. He was already playing good enough to produce more than what had gone in for himself. It was just reminders of a couple little things he could do, and he’s just been really good.”
