Comedian Bert Kreischer faced a life-altering medical emergency that may have saved his life. In early January, the 53-year-old known for ‘Free Bert’ woke up with severe leg pain and went to the emergency room. Doctors found a large blood clot behind his knee and additional clots in his lungs. Kreischer began taking blood thinners and had to abstain from alcohol as part of his recovery.
In March 2026, Kreischer experienced a close call while traveling between North Dakota and Iowa. A tire on one of his tour buses blew out on Interstate 94 around midnight, forcing his team to switch to other buses. The first bus caught fire the next morning, but the driver, the only occupant, escaped uninjured.
In a conversation with the bus driver, Kreischer realized that his lifestyle change due to the blood clots had potentially saved his life. Had he been drinking, he might have been asleep on the burning bus. This revelation had a profound effect on him, giving him a greater appreciation for life’s random twists.
Kreischer compared his experience to a story about Seth MacFarlane, who missed a flight on the morning of September 11, 2001. Kreischer noted how accepting random luck can sometimes save lives.
In recent interviews, Kreischer revealed that his diagnosis marked a turning point for his health and weight. He embarked on a weight loss journey after his doctor and family urged him. At one point, a full-body scan indicated he had a body fat percentage of 40%. This motivated him to take tirzepatide, a GLP-1 medication, with the goal of losing 95 pounds.
Kreischer shared that the blood clot experience made him aware of his own mortality. The comedy host is famous for his ‘Machine’ persona, often appearing shirtless. This persona was even turned into a comedy film in which Kreischer played a fictionalized version of himself.
Recently, Kreischer spoke to Fox News Digital before attending a For Your Consideration event for ‘Free Bert’. The Netflix comedy series depicts Kreischer trying to balance family life with his career.
The show’s renewal for a second season reflects Kreischer’s success over the years. From his beginnings as a broke father in Los Angeles, he now embraces his growth and achievements. Despite the challenges, including a shift to sobriety, Kreischer remains optimistic about life’s possibilities.
