The Ada County court has unsealed the autopsy reports for the victims of the University of Idaho student stabbings. The transfer occurred after Bryan Kohberger successfully requested a change of venue. Dr. Veena Singh, the chief medical examiner from Spokane, conducted the autopsies. She was expected to testify if the accused had not pleaded guilty.
Before the tragic events, University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and two others were photographed together. This image was shared on Instagram by Goncalves before four of them were fatally stabbed in November 2022.
The autopsies revealed wounds consistent with a “Ka-Bar Full Size US Marine Corps Fighting Knife.” Some injuries might have been inflicted by different parts of the weapon. The reports revealed that all four victims endured multiple sharp-force injuries, resulting in significant pain and suffering. The attack occurred on November 13, 2022, around 4 a.m. Most of the victims were asleep at the time.
Additionally, Kaylee Goncalves sustained blunt-force injuries, and an unidentified object might have covered her mouth. Signs of asphyxia were noted. Xana Kernodle was the only victim not in bed, showing defensive wounds on her hands and arms.
Authorities discovered a leather Ka-Bar sheath in the bed with Goncalves and Mogen, which contained Kohberger’s DNA. This led investigators to look into Kohberger using genetic genealogy. He was attending classes nearby at Washington State University and was arrested at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022.
Kohberger, a criminology Ph.D. student, pleaded guilty last year. He avoided a potential death sentence by the firing squad. He is currently serving four life sentences, along with an additional ten-year sentence. Early reports from his time in prison include complaints about the food and treatment by other inmates.
