A Mother’s Discovery of Her Autistic Son’s Artistic Talent

A mother from Clacton-on-Sea, England, Katie Morris, has shared a heartfelt discovery about her autistic son, Michael, highlighting his hidden artistic talent.

Morris, a mother of five, revealed that three of her children have additional needs, including 12-year-old Michael, who has high-functioning autism and global developmental delay (GDD). ‘He is such a brave and strong boy,’ Morris shared in an interview with Newsweek.

High-functioning autism and GDD are neurodevelopmental conditions, each affecting individuals uniquely. Generally, high-functioning autism describes someone who is autistic, possesses average or above-average intelligence, can verbally communicate, yet may face challenges with social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and routine changes. Conversely, GDD represents significant delays in a child’s development across multiple areas like speech, learning, movement, or daily living skills.

Though Michael encounters more challenges than typical boys his age, Morris stated that he always strives to overcome obstacles. Art has become a vital outlet for Michael. ‘He loves arts and crafts, although he has to be in the right mood,’ Morris explained.

Research corroborates the benefits of arts and crafts for autistic individuals. A 2022 review in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy found creative arts interventions, like drawing, painting, and coloring, improved social interaction, communication, and emotional development among children with autism. The study emphasized that regular creative activities can enhance essential developmental and social skills while offering enjoyable self-expression.

Morris acknowledged these benefits for Michael, but his painting of a whale at school revealed a deeper talent beyond therapeutic purposes. In a TikTok video on her account, @sunshine.falls, Morris shared a moment when Michael, then 11, brought home his striking whale painting, surprising her with his unrecognized skill.

‘He doesn’t like to draw at home,’ Morris noted, expressing amazement when Michael displayed the picture. ‘I asked him if he did it and he nonchalantly said, “Yes, of course.”‘ Emotion overcame Morris as she admired the piece, proud of her son’s accomplishment.

Social media users echoed Morris’s astonishment. ‘It’s amazing,’ one commented, while others compared it to an album cover and acknowledged his talent.

Advice poured in on nurturing Michael’s talent effectively. ‘Let him be in control. Provide the paint and paper, that’s all,’ suggested one user, emphasizing a pressure-free approach.

Morris acknowledged the advice, expressing gratitude and intending to make art supplies more accessible for Michael. Over a year post-discovery, Michael continues developing creativity, crafting sculptures and magnets for the family.

Through Michael’s artistic journey, Morris hopes to remind others that children with autism can achieve like any other children. Michael’s accomplishments resonate as a testament to the potential within every child.
