Advised Guidelines for Taking Oral GLP-1 Medications Like Wegovy

19 minutes ago 0

Those prescribed oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, such as Wegovy tablets, should avoid taking the medication with morning coffee or tea. According to the FDA’s prescribing information, Wegovy tablets must be taken on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water. No other liquids should be consumed. It’s essential to wait at least 30 minutes before consuming food, beverages, or other oral medications.

Wegovy, the first FDA-approved oral medication for chronic weight management, has distinct guidelines compared to the injectable options. Its absorption in the digestive system can be affected by food and drink, making these instructions vital.

Oral Wegovy should be taken on an empty stomach with only water. Coffee, tea, juice, or other drinks should not accompany the pill as they can interfere with absorption, said Dr. Michael Hall, a board-certified physician and longevity specialist.

Dr. Hall recommends the following morning routine for users of oral GLP-1 medications:

  • Wake up.
  • Take the Wegovy tablet whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water. Do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablets.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes.
  • Eat breakfast, drink coffee or tea, and take any other oral medications.

According to the expert, food and beverages other than water, and other oral medicines, can affect absorption if taken too soon. The safest practice is to avoid anything else by mouth for 30 minutes following the tablet intake. GLP-1 medications may also slow stomach emptying, impacting how other medicines are absorbed.

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel supports these guidelines, emphasizing that a GLP-1 pill should be on an empty stomach with water. Tea consumed later in the day generally does not interfere with oral GLP-1s, but patients should consult their physicians. Certain teas, like green, black, and white, can support digestion, while ginger and peppermint can alleviate nausea.
