Aftermath of Bangkok Music Bar Fire

The recent fire at a Bangkok music bar that claimed over 30 lives deeply affected the community. Among the victims were four key members of the band performing when the fire broke out. This has been a significant focus in Thailand, evoking emotions of sadness and concern, as well as demands for accountability.

Chanyanuch Pudmon, the sister of the deceased keyboard player, spoke on his behalf. She expressed that he would want everyone to remember him with happiness, recalling his smiling presence on stage, rather than with grief.

The fire erupted Sunday night, resulting in at least 33 fatalities and numerous injuries, with 17 people critically injured. According to Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, head of the forensic institute, most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation. A few died due to burns. The cause of the fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar is under scrutiny. Investigators are examining if flammable soundproofing foam, locked exits, and legal registration of the venue played roles.

The band, Totsakan, was notable at the bar for their good-time music every Sunday, blending traditional and modern sounds popular in rural areas. During the chaos, the band was the first to notice a spark from a circuit breaker suspected to have ignited the fire.

In a separate interview, the band’s leader, Atipat Wijan, known as “Ice,” recounted the distressing moments following the blaze. He shared how lead singer Nahatai Sajjalert, “Breeze,” could not be revived despite resuscitation efforts. Ice explained that she appeared peaceful, though unresponsive.

Misunderstandings initially led to the belief that keyboardist Preutthipong Pudmon, “Kwang,” survived, but he perished that night. Drummer Nattapat Thamnita, “Biw,” was evacuated but did not recover.

The band’s other male singer, Thitiwat Kaewkanha, “Din,” died on Wednesday in the hospital with severe burns.

Surviving victims and families met at a police station to seek compensation and collect personal belongings. Natthaphong Lakhorn described the harrowing scene, mentioning a security guard assisting evacuees despite conflicting police reports.

Kanticha Singkhon, responsible for her younger brother after losing their mother in the fire, expressed a need for personal outreach from the bar owners. Arrangements for compensation have proven insufficient, with initial offers covering only minimal expenses.
