Aleks Tatum’s Senior Night Experience

Aleks Tatum, Hobart’s quarterback, anticipated senior night would be meaningful. During his third season as the Brickies’ starting quarterback, Tatum fully embraced the emotional significance once the moment arrived.

“It was very emotional,” Tatum shared. “I guess every senior experiences it, but it goes by in the blink of an eye. Just a few years back, I was a sophomore starter after my first look on special teams as a freshman. It’s astonishing to watch friendships evolve through three groups of seniors. Those seniors were great role models.”

Tatum reflected on his contributions not only to his team but also to the community.

Performance Against Hanover Central

Tatum showcased his skills in a Northwest Crossroads Conference game against Hanover Central. The quarterback completed 8 out of 12 passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 77 yards, leading the Brickies to a 42-14 victory. Hobart, currently holding a 5-2 record, had faced consecutive conference defeats to Andrean and Lowell.

These losses prompted introspection for Tatum and his team. A brief “mental break” allowed him to reset before his remarkable performance against Hanover Central.

Hobart coach Eric Schreiber Jr. praised Tatum, stating, “He played really well. Earlier, he was loose, fun, and composed. Against Andrean, the moment was big; he tried to do too much, impacting his execution. Last week, he didn’t trust his teammates, rushing throws. We spent a lot of time refocusing him to the style he played in the first weeks.”

Season Statistics

Entering Friday’s game, Tatum had completed 62 of 104 pass attempts for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns, with only one interception. Additionally, he rushed for 300 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Against Hanover Central, highlights included a 37-yard touchdown pass to junior Miles White, a 28-yard diving catch by senior Stephen Miller, a 41-yard pass to senior Bryce Tolliver, and a 55-yard completion to White.

Tatum’s Leadership

Miles White described Tatum as “the leader,” saying, “If we were a family, he’d be the father, ensuring everyone is okay.” Bryce Tolliver, a Northern Illinois recruit, appreciated Tatum’s leadership and stated, “I love Aleks. We have a great connection, built more since last year.”

Schreiber identified Tatum as “the heart and soul” of the Brickies, noting his impact on and off the field. “Kids gravitate toward him. Little kids love him and want his autograph. He’s deserving of all this recognition.”

Over the weekend, Tatum reflected, which helped him realign his approach. His accountability and coachability inspired his teammates.

Tatum’s Growth and Future Plans

Tatum highlighted his physical and mental growth over his career, stating, “As a sophomore, I was 175 pounds. You mature slowly, understanding leadership dynamics. Physically, I improved, but leading a team mentally mattered more.”

With offers from Wabash and Trine, and interest from Grand Valley State and Findlay, Tatum remains hopeful about his football future. He expressed, “Anywhere offering, I’m deeply interested. I love football’s impact on my life and wish to continue playing.”

Coach Schreiber remarked on Tatum’s future, noting the ongoing process for many players. “It’s about finding their path. It takes time.”
