Amanda Seyfried, the renowned actress, revealed her decision to decline a television series primarily due to its frequent sexual content. Seyfried shared this insight during a conversation with Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton, New York. She emphasized her discomfort with performing intimate scenes as time progresses.
According to Seyfried, she has grown increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of being ‘naked with a stranger’ on screen. This decision aligns with sentiments expressed by other actresses. Gina Gershon, for instance, once turned down a role in the 1981 horror movie ‘Friday the 13th Part 2’ because of its exploitative nudity.
Seyfried stated, “I passed on a show where I would have to have sex all the time because of the sex… I don’t want to do it. I’m uncomfortable with it.”
Seyfried noted that her perspective on romantic portrayals has evolved since she began her career. Initially more open to filming intimate scenes, she now prioritizes her comfort and professional boundaries. She admitted that earlier in her career, she felt compelled to participate in such scenes to avoid jeopardizing her job.
Other actresses have shared similar experiences. Christina Ricci mentioned facing legal threats for refusing an intimate scene, while Keira Knightley included a no-nudity clause in her contracts to exercise greater control. Sydney Sweeney of ‘Euphoria’ fame defended the necessity of explicit scenes for her role, despite suggestions to cut back.
Hollywood has made strides in safeguarding actors filming intimate scenes. Jessica Steinrock, an intimacy coordinator, explained the role’s emergence in 2018, ensuring safety and consent during productions. Guidelines under SAG-AFTRA mandate advance notice and written nudity riders before filming begins.
Motherhood has further influenced Seyfried’s stance. Sharing two children with actor Thomas Sadoski, she values setting firm boundaries professionally and personally. ‘I have kids now who are paying attention to what I do, and so I have to be less of a pushover,’ she commented.
