Ammonia Gas Leak Triggers Health Alerts in Boyle Heights

An ammonia gas leak at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights led to significant health orders due to concerns over air quality.

Shelter in Place

A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents in the area extending from south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, and from Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents in these zones were advised to:

• Close all windows and doors.
• Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
• Bring all individuals and pets to a room inside and close vents.

Smoke Advisory

A smoke advisory covered a large portion of East Los Angeles. The public was advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly outdoor exercise. Those with health conditions were urged to stay indoors. L.A. County also recommended using caution in areas such as Montebello and Monterey Park. Vulnerable individuals should remain indoors, closing all windows and doors, and limiting exposure to outside air. In emergencies, residents were instructed to call 911.
