Andrew Garfield Faces Criticism Over Remarks About Billionaires at Film Screening

4 weeks ago 0

Andrew Garfield encountered backlash on social media after addressing “billionaires” during a discussion of his new film, “The Uprising,” at a Los Angeles screening. The Movie Report shared video of Garfield and director Paul Greengrass answering questions about their historical film, which focuses on England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt, occurring post-Black Death. High taxes imposed by King Richard II to support the Hundred Years’ War lead impoverished peasants to the brink.

Garfield responded to a question about his hopes for audience takeaways: “I hope they feel galvanized and find parallels in their current struggles with those depicted in the film from a distant time. And if billionaires watch it, I hope they’re frightened,” he remarked.

Critics quickly reacted to Garfield’s comments, highlighting the actor’s substantial wealth accrued through his Hollywood career.

Rick Davis, a pastor from Providence Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, voiced skepticism: “Excited for a film on Wat Tyler. But Garfield’s statements make it sound like socialist rhetoric.” Garfield portrays a fictional character named Ploughman while Cosmo Jarvis plays Wat Tyler.

Spencer Pratt, who once ran for Los Angeles mayor, pointed out irony in Garfield’s statement: “The billionaires who fund your movies and pay your hefty checks – are they the ones you’re referring to? Garfield recently earned $5M for portraying billionaire Sam Altman in ‘Artificial.'”

Substack columnist John William Sherrod commented: “Celebrity, millionaire Garfield is role-playing as if he’s part of the working class.” Noam Blum from Tablet Magazine noted, “Many billionaires were involved in this film’s production, likely more than those who’ll watch it.”

Garfield stars in blockbusters like “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

Neither Garfield nor Greengrass replied to Fox News Digital’s inquiry. Reporter Joshua Q. Nelson focuses on cultural trends, education, and public policy.
