Appeals Court Denies Trump’s Request on Kennedy Center Name Removal

The Kennedy Center, as observed on June 28 with its facade still under tarp and scaffolding, is in the midst of legal and structural changes. A recent ruling from a federal appeals court on Wednesday has significant implications for the arts facility in Washington, D.C.

A panel of three judges from the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected President Donald Trump’s plea to halt the removal of his name from the Kennedy Center. The signage, covered since June 13, has now been confirmed as removed according to the center’s executive director’s earlier court submission.

The judges, Patricia Millett, Robert Wilkins, and Gregory Katsas, concluded that Trump did not prove the center would suffer ‘irreparable harm’ without his association. The removal request emphasized that efforts already invested would be wasted, yet the judges stated a stay would not mitigate the supposed damages since Trump’s name had already been eradicated.

Trump’s legal representatives warned that future fundraising could face risks without his endorsement, potentially exacerbating the Kennedy Center’s financial challenges. However, the court demanded evidence beyond mere assertions by the center’s executive, Matt Floca, a professional in physical plant management, suggesting that the claims lacked documented proof.

This current legal battle stems from actions initiated by Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, against Trump and the Kennedy Center’s board. The presiding judge for this case, Christopher R. Cooper, instructed the Kennedy Center to deliver a report on its operations and programming by the month’s end.

Meanwhile, the Kennedy Center’s program schedule shows limited activities. Listings include outdoor movie screenings, children’s workshops, and five live performances at the Millennium Stage in July. Historically, the center hosted over 2,000 arts and education events annually, featuring daily performances.
