Atlanta Mayor Faces Criticism Over Social Media Exchange

1 hour ago 0

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens faced criticism after a controversial exchange with constituent Jonathan Brimer. The mayor told Brimer to “shut up” after Brimer questioned the city’s transit and pedestrian-safety commitments.

The exchange began when Dickens posted a video on Instagram, showcasing his visit with Nature Gurlz, a group encouraging Black women to engage in outdoor activities. Brimer responded by urging the mayor to focus on transportation priorities, specifically mentioning the need for improvements on Peachtree Street and the Beltline rail project.

Brimer’s comments highlighted the public’s frustration over delayed transportation projects. The Peachtree Street project, valued at $4.85 million, aims to enhance safety with better bike lanes and crossings. It is scheduled for construction between 2027 and 2029.

Brimer also critiqued the status of the Beltline rail project funded by a 2016 sales tax. The project’s progress stalled at 30% design by 2025, as officials reevaluated priorities.

In response to the criticism, the mayor’s office declined to comment, leaving the origin and intent of Dickens’ response unclear.

Beyond local concerns, Dickens expressed disappointment with his own party’s decision not to consider Atlanta as a host city for the 2028 Democratic National Convention. He accused DNC chairman Ken Martin of neglecting Atlanta, the South, and Black voters.

The selection process for the convention now focuses on Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. The DNC cited criteria like arena size, hotel capacity, and local partnerships as factors in their decision-making.
