Country music icon Bill Anderson recently paid tribute to his dear friend Dolly Parton, who passed away at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Anderson appeared on ‘America’s Newsroom’ to share personal memories and reflect on the impactful career, generosity, and enduring legacy of the legendary singer.
Parton’s sister, Stella, provided insight into why Dolly chose to keep her cancer diagnosis private. In an interview with ‘CBS Mornings,’ Stella explained that Dolly did not want her fans or family to be saddened by the news. Although only those closest to her were aware of the diagnosis, her decision was rooted in her desire to avoid negative attention and concern.
“Dolly did not want anybody to tell that,” Stella said. “She could not bear negative things, and she would not have wanted her fans worried about it.” She further shared that the family knew Dolly’s wishes and those closer to her understood her choice.
Parton’s death was announced on Instagram by her nephew, Bryan Seaver. He celebrated Dolly’s extraordinary career and highlighted her philanthropic endeavors, including her work with the Imagination Library. The news prompted global tributes from fans and fellow artists, which Stella believes would have delighted Dolly.
“She’d be really happy and delighted that people have shown her so much love,” Stella expressed. “Bottom line, end of the day, her family and Carl’s family and probably Judy’s family are the people that she would want to say, ‘See, everything I did, they cared. They really loved me.’”
Dolly Parton gained fame in 1967 on “The Porter Wagoner Show.” During her tenure, she delivered many timeless duets and garnered Grammy nominations. In 1974, Dolly decided to pursue a solo career, which led her to write the celebrated song, “I Will Always Love You,” as an explanation to Wagoner, a close friend.
She recounted singing the piece privately in his office, which left a memorable impression on Wagoner. “That’s the best song you’ve ever wrote,” he said, agreeing to produce it.
Parton’s achievements include ten Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her contributions extend beyond music. The Imagination Library, Dolly’s book gifting initiative, provides children with monthly books—regardless of their financial circumstances.
Dolly shared her inspiration for the Imagination Library in a heartfelt statement: “When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. The seeds of these dreams are often found in books.”
