Bill Maher Criticizes Celebrities on Israel-Gaza Conflict

3 weeks ago 0

Comedian Bill Maher spent the first night of Rosh Hashanah focusing criticism on celebrities, particularly Macklemore, for their comments regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict. On HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher argued that labeling the war as genocide contributes to rising antisemitism worldwide.

During the episode, Maher criticized Democratic Party members who oppose Israel’s actions amidst the ongoing conflict. “Because nowhere has this moral confusion become more obvious than in a place called Gaza,” Maher commented. He described Gaza as a territory won by Israel after a war and later given back as a peace gesture.

Maher also criticized Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, for his anti-Israel stance. While performing in New Jersey, Macklemore voiced his support for Palestine, describing the situation as genocide. Maher countered, “Actually, you don’t know s—. It’s not. It’s not a genocide. It’s a counterattack in a war.”

Macklemore made headlines for his remarks and attire while opening for Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium, expressing support for the Palestinian cause. He declared, “A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine.”

Maher continued to challenge liberal figures portraying Israel as committing genocide. He stated, “Gaza equals genocide is a lie, an easily provable lie.” He criticized Democrats for endorsing these claims, mentioning it’s akin to the party’s actions after the Civil War. According to Maher, these narratives fuel antisemitism, noting that “history shows, for whatever reason, when it comes to hating the Jews, people don’t need a lot of permission.”

Macklemore’s comments faced scrutiny from Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations, who called such political stances a “calculated risk.” Mudd emphasized, “Take a political stance and most celebrities can count on alienating half their audience.” He suggested the rapper should weigh the potential career risks.

Mudd concluded his remarks by advising Macklemore on the risks of his controversial stance. “If Macklemore were my client, I’d advise him that calling a war a genocide invites the public shredding Bill Maher just delivered,” said Mudd. He noted that while entertainers are free to take political stances, they must recognize the consequences on their reputation and career.
