Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham Defend Coach Amid Controversy

Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham addressed a viral pre-game speech by Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White following their victory over the New York Liberty, 106-92. White dedicated her pre-game media session to defending herself after criticism for her initial response to an incident involving Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington. Carrington had hit Cunningham in the face in a previous game.

Initially, White told reporters she didn’t believe the hit was intentional, but after reviewing footage, she called it “egregious.” Following the game, Cunningham supported White, emphasizing the team’s unity. “There’s been a lot of outside noise,” Cunningham said. “But our locker room is good. We have each other’s backs.” She defended White’s first comments, noting White had not seen the play.

Cunningham also highlighted White’s history with Carrington, having coached her for two seasons with the Connecticut Sun. “She is a great defender,” Cunningham stated, explaining that White’s acknowledgment of Carrington’s skills did not conflict with supporting her own team.

Clark also defended White, sharing that they spoke earlier that day. She empathized with White’s struggles under criticism. “We’re human and she has feelings,” Clark said. She related to the pressure, mentioning, “Even thick skin has limits.” Clark criticized the divisive atmosphere surrounding the league and encouraged unity. “We need to do a better job at uplifting each other,” she said.

Clark declared their determination to win for White, sharing, “There was no way we were losing this game tonight.” Despite the fan reaction booing White during pregame introductions, Clark maintained the team’s loyalty. “We’re going to ride for her,” she affirmed.

White’s pregame comments touched on what she described as hateful and divisive forces against the league. “The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness will not win,” White stated firmly, committing to stand by her players.

Amid national controversies, including previous incidents involving the Fever, White remains focused on leading the team through to the playoffs. The Fever are currently positioned as a strong contender for the top seed in the East.
