Caleb Komolafe Stays Committed to Northwestern

Caleb Komolafe, the Northwestern running back known for his standout performance in 2025, faced questions during the Big Ten football media days about his decision to stay with the Wildcats in an era of frequent transfers. Komolafe achieved 941 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 190 carries last season. Despite opportunities elsewhere, he chose to remain at Northwestern.

During media days, Komolafe credited his decision to the strong bonds with teammates and the leadership of his coaching staff. “The brotherhood I have in the locker room, the relationships I built, and Coach David Braun and the staff,” he said. His admiration also extends to his position coach, Aristotle Thompson, who he feels has enhanced his game.

The arrival of Chip Kelly as Northwestern’s new offensive coordinator was a pivotal moment shared by Komolafe during a news conference alongside Coach Braun. Komolafe recalled being at home when he learned about Kelly’s hiring, describing it as a “surreal feeling.”

Under Kelly’s guidance, Braun hopes Komolafe will further his development within the new offensive strategy. Komolafe, who started in 2025 after Cam Porter was injured, ended the season with four 100-yard games and demonstrated growth in his play.

Consistency and dedication contributed significantly to his breakthrough, as stated by Braun. Komolafe focused on pre-practice routines, recovery, and studying the playbook. Despite initial frustrations, his diligence paid off in the latter half of the season.

Komolafe’s goals for the upcoming season include improving in the passing game and enhancing his reading of defensive movements. He seeks insights from Kelly to maximize his potential.

The Northwestern backfield, which includes Joseph Himon II and Gavin Sawchuk, is expected to be a strong asset. Himon delivered 486 yards last season, while Sawchuk, an Oklahoma transfer, contributed eight touchdowns at Florida State.
