Challenges in Renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The recent renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, commissioned by President Donald Trump, has encountered problems. Despite the intention to create a clear “American flag blue” bottom, an algal bloom has caused the pool to turn chartreuse, complicating the efforts to beautify Washington, D.C. The renovation cost more than $14 million and was meant to prepare the city for the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Construction teams face significant challenges due to the pool’s scale—larger than 10 Olympic-sized pools—and its water source, the often dirty Tidal Basin. Algae has been a recurring issue at the site since its opening over a century ago. This latest renovation aimed to address the algae problem, a priority for Trump after receiving negative feedback from a German visitor.

Park service workers, alongside contractors, employed chemicals and innovative methods to control the algae. These include ozone nanobubbles and a milder treatment using hydrogen peroxide, which avoids harmful side effects to marine life and the environment. Cleaning efforts also involve vacuuming the pool like a carpet, removing algae and exposing the intended blue paint.

Cochise Wanzer II, president of a Virginia pool company, noted the expectations may have been unrealistic. The untreated river water naturally promotes algae growth, and the pool’s new dark paint elevates the water temperature, further encouraging this growth. Wanzer suggested a more radical approach: draining the pool, cleaning it, and refilling with treated water.

As cleaning progresses, the public continues to visit the iconic site. Tourists Rick and Ariana Pettit from Las Vegas commented optimistically on the pool’s appearance while staff worked on maintenance. These efforts highlight both the aspirations and ongoing challenges in maintaining one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
