The Los Angeles Chargers, under a new offensive scheme, struggled in their opening game, losing to the Arizona Cardinals 26-14. This was head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first Week 1 defeat in the NFL. The Chargers tried to implement more pre-snap motion and unbalanced formations but faced challenges in execution.
Arizona capitalized on key moments. They blocked a punt in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of field position to score soon after. The crowd at SoFi Stadium had little to cheer about.
Sloppy at times, too sloppy,Harbaugh noted about his team’s performance.
Tight end Charlie Kolar offered a blunt assessment, describing the offensive play as lacking effectiveness. Arizona, who only won three games last year, dominated the game, maintaining possession significantly longer than the Chargers.
Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. highlighted the defense’s role, stating, We’ve got to do a better job getting those three-and-outs and getting off the field.
The game marked the debut of new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. The plan was to protect quarterback Justin Herbert by releasing the ball quickly. While Herbert did face fewer hits, he struggled to find open receivers. His performance included 17 completions on 27 attempts, totaling 209 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked three times, notably on a critical fourth-and-goal play.
Herbert’s frequent target, Ladd McConkey, scored a touchdown but left with a chest injury. KeAndre Lambert-Smith also left due to a hamstring issue, further limiting receiving options.
In an unusual preseason strategy, the Chargers avoided showcasing much of their playbook against opponents they would face again in the regular season, including the Rams, who shared the local spotlight. The Chargers were favorites against Arizona but fell short of expectations.
For Arizona, quarterback Jacoby Brissett completed 27 of 37 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown. His calm performance contributed to their offensive success, with Trey McBride catching nine passes for 95 yards. The Cardinals scored more points against the Chargers than in most of their games last year.
Despite scoring early, Chargers’ first-round pick Omarion Hampton couldn’t sustain momentum and finished with 43 rushing yards. Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland converted four field goals, narrowly missing a fifth from 54 yards.
Harbaugh, facing the challenge of rallying his team so early in the season, expressed determination, saying, We understand we need to bounce back. It’s called resolve.
