Chase Lockwood is among the seniors from Libertyville who successfully defended the Class 4A state title. With high school behind them, many embark on college journeys. Lockwood, however, started his immediately, moving into his dorm at Illinois State less than a day after the championship game on June 13.
It’s been a whirlwind, and I haven’t fully processed our accomplishment yet,Lockwood shared. But now I’m a college pitcher, playing weekly against tougher competition, which will be exhilarating.
Lockwood was named the 2026 News-Sun Baseball Player of the Year, holding the team record with 30 career wins. He achieved this with a complete game victory in the Wildcats’ 2-1 win over Lane Tech in the Schaumburg Supersectional on June 9. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander concluded the season with a 12-1 record, a 1.89 ERA, and a striking 69-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 70 1/3 innings.
Libertyville’s record (31-10-1) during Lockwood’s varsity career underscores their success, with 92 wins and three conference titles. His awards include being a two-time all-state first-team pick and two-time conference pitcher of the year.
His stats are a testament to his work ethic,Libertyville coach Matt Thompson remarked. We always felt confident with him on the mound. Most importantly, we will miss his leadership.
When not pitching, Lockwood played first base and was a key hitter. He batted .340 with 17 RBIs, including a two-run double in the state semifinal against Mount Carmel. In the state championship game win over Maine South, he contributed with a hit and runs.
Though known for his pitching, his versatility on the field is notable. Lockwood’s repertoire includes a curveball, slider, change-up, and a fastball clocking 90 mph. His confident demeanor has been evident since his unexpected varsity promotion in 2024 offered him the chance to excel.
Lockwood’s initial varsity performance was promising, boasting an 8-2 record with a 0.66 ERA. His growth continued with a 10-0 record and 0.82 ERA the following season.
Mental toughness has been key to my development,Lockwood said.Facing challenges makes you stronger.
An example of his resilience came in a pivotal game against Lane Tech, where he navigated a bases-loaded situation to preserve the lead.
Competition is the true test,he remarked.
Chase’s competitive nature is partly inspired by his older brothers, Cole and Connor, who also performed well for Libertyville and played together at Valparaiso. They influence and motivate him to strive for excellence.
Having Connor for guidance is invaluable,Chase mentioned. His experiences and advice have shaped my approach to pitching.
Connor Lockwood faced challenges, including a surgery in 2023, but earned second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. His journey serves as an example for Chase.
I’ve learned the importance of perseverance from Connor,Chase reflected. The upcoming college season will be demanding, but I’m eager to begin.
