1 hour ago 0

CLEVELAND — The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians continued their series of close encounters on Saturday at Progressive Field, meeting for the sixth time this season. The White Sox clinched a 3-1 victory, witnessed by 31,727 fans on the Fourth of July.

Marking his one-year milestone in the league, Colson Montgomery hit a decisive solo home run in the eighth inning. The team secured an additional run in the ninth inning, solidifying their lead. Montgomery expressed the intensity of the matchup, “This whole series has felt like a playoff series, but then I look at the calendar and we are not even past the All-Star break yet. It’s a good learning experience for down the road.”

Miguel Vargas, celebrating his first All-Star selection, contributed with an RBI and a run. This win allowed the White Sox (46-42) to tie with the Guardians (47-43) for first place in the American League Central.

Manager Will Venable highlighted the challenges of such close games. “Every game you play that’s close, there are situations where you must execute and get the job done,” he stated. He noted the lessons learned from each game in the series.

Starting pitcher Sean Burke delivered a strong performance, offering much-needed length for the team. Though not involved in the decision, Burke pitched six innings, striking out 11 and allowing one run on seven hits. Reflecting on his performance, Burke said, “I didn’t realize it was that many strikeouts. It’s about getting back to simplicity, attacking the zone, and getting them in bad counts.”

The game began with the Sox giving Burke a lead. Vargas walked and scored from first base on a Montgomery double. The Guardians evened the score with an Austin Hedges home run in the fifth. However, Burke’s efforts led to a critical rundown that tagged out Steven Kwan between third and home.

Venable praised Burke’s execution, emphasizing the importance of limiting walks. “Filling the zone was the game plan. You must continue throwing strikes if you get ahead. Burke did a great job,” Venable remarked.

Montgomery’s 22nd home run of the season broke the eighth-inning tie. “I felt comfortable at the plate and committed to my plan,” Montgomery said, citing recent inconsistencies with his approach.

Tristan Peters created breathing room in the ninth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Vargas. The bullpen, featuring Brandon Eisert and Grant Taylor, sealed the victory. Eisert delivered two perfect innings, earning the win. Taylor secured his third save of the season in the ninth.

Venable commended their performances, stating, “Eisert was amazing, providing crucial innings when we were thin in the bullpen. Grant did a great job closing after a tough outing a few days ago.”

The White Sox demonstrated resilience following two walk-off losses. “Both teams are playing well,” Burke commented. “It’s going to be a race down to the wire. Winning after losing two close ones shows our strength.”
