On Sunday, China successfully launched the Shenzhou 23 spacecraft, carrying three astronauts to the Tiangong space station. The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China. Li Benqi, an official at the center, confirmed the mission as a ‘complete success’ in remarks broadcasted by Chinese state media.

This mission features Zhu Yangzhu as the commander, alongside astronauts Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai Ka-ying, who is also known by the Mandarin transliteration of her name, Li Jiaying. Lai, hailing from Hong Kong, holds a doctoral degree in computer forensics. She is the first astronaut from Hong Kong to participate in a space mission and is the fourth female Chinese astronaut to venture into space, as reported by state media.

The mission aims to conduct numerous science and application projects during its duration. The crew is set to perform an in-orbit rotation with the Shenzhou 21 team, who have been aboard the Tiangong space station for over 200 days. The Shenzhou 21 mission, launched in late October, included China’s youngest astronaut and featured a live mammal experiment with four mice.

One of the astronauts on Shenzhou 23 will stay at the space station for a full year. This trial seeks to assess human adaptability and performance in long-duration space environments, according to state media sources.

China’s focus on expanding its space program has led to multiple missions to the Tiangong station. The nation developed this station after being excluded from the International Space Station due to U.S. national security concerns.

As China advances in its space endeavors, it stands as a significant competitor to the U.S., with NASA planning its lunar landing by 2028. Initially hosting crew members in 2021, the Tiangong station, meaning ‘Heavenly Palace,’ has been the site of several key missions. Notably, an emergency mission once brought home a group of astronauts when a damaged spacecraft was deemed unsafe for travel.
